Pura Ulun Danu Bratan

In Intro

Cycling to the Pura Ulun Danu Bratan water temple in the Bedugul region is one of the most challenging rides we do. From Canggu, it is a ride of approximately 50 kilometres and 1400 metres of climbing to reach the temple. It is also some of the most rewarding cycling owing to the spectacular views on the way up, and the exhilarating descent on the way back!

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan – ‘The Source Temple of Lake Beratan’

The Shivaite temple is located on the shores of Lake Bratan in the mountains near Bedugul. After cycling up a mountain it seems almost surreal to reach the summit and be at a lake, however, the cooler temperatures and delicious strawberries the region is famous for have you quickly forgetting how challenging the climb was.

Built in 1633, Pura Ulun Danu Bratan is used for ceremonies to honour the Balinese water, lake, and river goddess Dewi Danu as the lake is of great importance as an irrigation source for central Bali. It is one of the most iconic temples in all of Bali and is featured as a cover image on most maps and guides.

Visiting Pura Ulun Danu Bratan

After parking our bikes with our guides, the 11-story pelinggih meru dedicated to Vishnu can be seen by taking a short walk through perfectly manicured grounds, past prayer ceremonies complete with the sound of bells and prayer and the soft smell of incense.

After walking through the gardens you quickly become captivated by the site of the temple on the water, and a calmness fills the body. Although popular with tourist groups, there is a quietness in the air, and time stands still as the water gently laps against the shore.

The stunning tulips on the lakes edge and the religious ceremonies taking place provide ample photo opportunities, and this beautiful temple reveals her beauty from all sides. It is also possible to hire a small duck-shaped paddle boat for the truly adventurous who want to take in the temple from the water.

After the enriching experience of visiting this stunning temple, we descend off the mountain with a reinvigorated spirit before enjoying a well-earned lunch at the bottom.
